VALERIE BIRKHOFF

I create expressive figurative sculptures. My clay sculptures often include other materials such as; wire, nails, beads, or epoxy resin. Cutting to expose their smooth insides, adding extra materials, and choosing various finishes creates abstraction and adds to the story of each piece.

My whimsical slab clay sculptures are inspired by interesting people I meet and wonderful animals ranging in size from nine feet to twelve inches. I maintained a commercial studio for ten years in the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz, CA before relocating to Nevada City. I'm a resident ceramic artist at As If Studios in Grass Valley creating there and in my home studio in Nevada City.

Faducci was developed in 2002 by the combined exploration of Solomon Bassoff and Domenica Mottarella. Their whimsical emotive sculptures have received enthusiastic acclaim and have been acquired for public art installations and private collections. Their creative interests are sparked by nature and influenced by the wildlife that surrounds their home in the Sierra foothills. They are experienced at creating artwork that celebrates the natural environment, while delighting and inspiring the viewer. They have accomplished this goal with installations at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA; Redding, CA; Natomas, CA; the Northwest Library in Oklahoma City; and most recently in Sunnyvale, CA.

Working in the public realm, I have come to understand the ability of art to transform our relationship to our physical environment by evoking a sense of emotional-curiosity, beauty, whimsy and/or a desire for additional investigation. I’ve had the pleasure to serve on several community engaged, architectural design team projects throughout my career and in each case, the collaborative values expressed through the project team becomes a driving force in design development. Public art is the portal within our built environment through which we may discover a common sense of identity and connection with our physical surroundings.
